Introduction
Hello, and welcome to this short article introducing items campaigns with the user location option.
This demonstration will familiarise you with items campaigns and how they are set up in Fredhopper’s Merchandising Studio.
Please be aware that test data is used throughout this demo, and you should refer to your own data sets when applying this functionality.
What are items campaigns?
Items campaigns can provide a means to inspire shoppers to purchase your products. Choosing the option user location displays items from the user's current location.
These campaigns can be set up to recommend products from the same category or brand, or to show products that 'complete the look' or have similar attributes, i.e. colour, size, fabric/material or price for example.
This is a great way to recommend other items to a shopper.
So how do we set up an items campaign using user location in the Merchandising studio? Let’s use a scenario to implement one.
The demo scenario is to set up a user location campaign to display 4 products of the same brand and category that the shopper is viewing, ranked by Price.
How to demo
Using your credentials open your Merchandising Studio. This will open on the campaigns tab by default:
Next … Click on new:
Let’s call this ‘You may also like’ …
Click SELECT SCOPE and choose the scope:
For this scenario, we won’t set up any additional triggers, as we’d like this campaign type to trigger on every product detail page, so we’ll just use the triggers inherited from the parent scope.
Scroll down to action; you’ll see that Items is already selected as default. Next, change the number of items from 1 to 4:
Use location is already selected as default, so there’s nothing to change on these options.
Next, we need to define how to filter the 4 items we want to show, click ADD FILTER and choose Brand from the drop-down:
Here you can either choose a particular brand if required, but we want to show 4 products of the same brand that the shopper has landed on.
So we want to say the brand is BRAND OF VIEWED ITEM. To do this click in the field showing the available brands, and start typing Brand of viewed item, until this option appears, and then select it:
Add Category as we did for Brand. So click on ADD FILTER, choose 'category', and then choose 'Category of viewed item':
Lastly, we want to rank these 4 items by Price:
Check your campaign configuration is accurate and click Save:
It’s best practice to check the campaign is firing as expected, so go to your Preview site:
Now, navigate to any detail page to see that the campaign appears with 4 products of the same brand and category, ranked by price…
Here you will see the product I have selected, and below are the 4 products and our campaign name, and you’ll see that the 4 products are all stripped long sleeve men’s shirts and they are ranked in price order:
If you are happy with the campaign, the next step is to send it for publication:
Once the campaign is published it will trigger according to your cache process.
Best practice
A few best practices to remember with regard to campaigns:
- Use the date and time trigger to set up campaigns in advance.
- De-active or archive campaigns that are not currently in use, which you can reactivate and publish at a later date (annual/seasonal events).
- Add appropriate labels so you can easily find campaigns.
