Introduction to creating new items campaign
This guide will provide you with simple step-by-step instructions to create an items campaign using Fredhopper's Merchandising Studio.
Items campaigns can provide a means to inspire shoppers to purchase your products. This could include: recommending products from the same category or brand offering discounts, showing products that shoppers are looking for at certain times of the year e.g. Black Friday, Summer sale or Champagne on Valentine's Day etc. Other uses could be to show products that 'complete the look' or have similar attributes, i.e. colour, size, fabric or price for example.
The configuration possibilities for use are vast. This article focuses on how to create an items campaign using a common scenario, which can easily be tailored to your own visual merchandising strategy.
It is recommended that you have read the 'Getting started with campaigns' article before you use campaigns in your Merchandising Studio.
Scenario
This scenario is set to be triggered across the entire catalogue which creates additional product recommendations on the product detail pages (PDP) to show eight products of the same brand and product type, ranked by highest units sold in the last week.
These can be shown to the shopper as products in the same category with a title/heading such as:
- You May Also Like
- How about ...
- Similar products
- Recommended for you
This configuration will enable the situation that, when a user is viewing a pair of Levi's jeans (on the product description page), they will see the product itself, plus four other pairs of Levi's jeans (i.e. same brand and same category, jeans):
Step by step guide
Step 1
Open the Fredhopper Merchandising Studio and login using your credentials:
Step 2

Step 6
Next, you can select a trigger from the dropdown, for this scenario we will add a Page Template trigger, and choose Detail from the options:
Adding this as the trigger means that whenever a shopper lands on any Detail page, the campaign will be actioned.
For more information on triggers in relation to campaigns see the 'Getting started with campaigns' article.
Step 7
Next, you need to configure the action; what will happen when a shopper's actions on your site trigger this campaign, i.e. they land on any product detail page.
This is the Action section of the screen and there are two parts that can be set:
- Display is used to confirm any text you would like to display around the campaign, and the content you may want to show to the shopper
- Content this is where the specific rules for the 'Items' campaign are configured
In this example, we will keep the Display settings blank as per their defaulted settings.

Step 9
In the Select section, type 8 in the field and choose User location:
Step 10

Step 12
Click ADD FILTER again:
Step 13

Step 14
Lastly, change the Rank by from the default (Natural) to Units sold last week:
Step 15

Step 16
To check the newly created campaign triggers as expected in your Merchandising Studio, click on Preview and run through the required steps to ensure the campaign section is generated successfully:
Step 17

Once this has been published the campaign will appear on your front end depending on your cache process.
