Introduction
This document will explain what scopes are, how rules are applied to scopes, and how to manage scopes in the Merchandising studio. This is not a technical guide, but merely to explain what scopes are and how to use them appropriately.
Awareness of scopes functionality may help you to troubleshoot and understand why a feature configuration may be performing as it is. We do not recommend that you make any changes in your scopes system settings unless you fully understand the technicalities and impact this may have to your functionality. For Attraqt Technical Support, please raise a ticket. Typically scope settings are set up at the implementation stage and rarely need to be changed.
Prerequisites
- You have attended initial implementation training, or read 'Getting started with Fredhopper'.
- Fredhopper's Merchandising Studio is integrated successfully for your business.
- You need to have permissions in Fredhopper's Merchandising Studio to create any rules which are applied to a scope.
What are scopes?
Scopes are a mechanism to segregate your business areas. This can help you control user permissions when they apply rules across your site/s. Settings can be applied at an individual scope level which controls language, special characters in data and currency symbols for example.
Scopes are typically set up to distinguish between different locales. Locales are set up where specific events or rules can be applied, that may differ to other locales.
For example, a leading footwear company has the following organisation structure across three global territory's:
- BIG footwear company (Parent Universe)
- EMEA (Repository)
- GB (Locale scope)
- FR (Locale scope)
- DE (Locale scope)
- NL (Locale scope)
- Americas (Repository)
- NCSA (Locale scope)
- AMER (Locale scope)
- NA (Locale scope)
- APAC (Repository)
- CHN (Locale scope)
- THL (Locale scope)
- JPN (Locale scope)
- AUS (Locale scope)
- NZ (Locale scope)
- EMEA (Repository)
Rules or configurations are applied to Locale's and triggers are inherited from the parent scope.
Why set up different scopes (locales)?
- Territories
- Merchandising Studio users/teams
- Legislative & cultural rules
- Data
- Campaign requirements (seasons may differ, sporting events, or country-specific sales)
- Language translations & currencies
Applying rules to scopes
Rules (Campaigns, Rankings, Result Modifications, Facets, Redirects, Synonyms and A/B Tests) created in the Merchandising Studio can only be applied to one scope at a time. They can be copied to other scopes as required.
For example, we want to copy the Clearance campaign from en_GB to en_GB - Men's and fr-Search scopes.
- Choose the campaign using the checkbox on the left.
- Click More actions and choose Copy.
- Select the scopes.
- Click Copy.
Scopes management
The Scopes manager page is where new scopes can be created, scope priorities can be amended, and scopes can be deleted. Scopes can be tailored to maximise rule operational efficiency, where users can be allowed or denied read/write/publication access to scopes.
Manage scopes in your Merchandising Studio by going to System > Management > Scopes manager. If you have read and write access to this page, we recommend that you do not make any changes here without the support of your data team, a superuser in your business or a Technical Consultant at Attraqt. If you would like to make changes to your scopes or any other settings in the System tab and do not have a data team or superuser, please raise a ticket so Attraqt can assist you.
