- A Ranking rule must be in place across the items (category) before you can apply the Result Modification to those items or category.
- You need to have permissions to create a Result Modification.
- You have read Getting started with result modifications.
- You will also need access to your Fredhopper Merchandising Studio in order to set up a ranking attribute.
Scenarios for navigation
Scenario 1: Group bridesmaids dresses by colour, ranked by price
We want to create a modification to our Women > Dresses > Bridesmaid Dresses product listing page that runs for 1 week. This modification will show the following colour order: Black, Pink, Gold, Purple, each of these groups will be ranked in price order high to low.
- Open your Fredhopper URL containing
/fredhopper/admin/ - Navigate to Result Modifications from the menu options:
- Click New, located underneath the navigation.
- Enter a name for your result modification, e.g. Bridesmaid dresses colour. Make sure this is a unique name.
- Click Select Scope and choose the scope that you want your result modification to apply to, then click Select.
- Next, you will need to select a trigger from the dropdown, for this scenario we will choose Catalogue Location (your Merchandising Studio may show this option as User Location).
Note: when creating a modification with a Catalogue/User Location the trigger will be applied to Navigation, not Search. To apply a modification trigger to Search see details below.
- Next, we need to specify and find the location where this trigger will be applied, by clicking on Add Location. In this scenario we will drill into the catalogue for Women, followed by Dresses, and then Bridesmaid dresses:
- Then click Select location.
- Optional:
- Change the dropdown from starts with (default) to, contains or equals to, or ends with.
- Add other locations.
- Once you have chosen a location, you may want the trigger to apply to all locations except the one you have selected, so you can use the checkbox to apply this option.
- Select the Date and time trigger. Amend the start date and start time to a week apart. In this scenario we want this modification to run from Sunday to Sunday, such as: 20/03/2022 at 12:01 AM to 27/03/2022 at 11:59 AM.
- Now, we want to add the action, i.e. what happens when a shopper lands on Women > Dresses > Bridesmaid dresses so click on Configure Modifications.
- When we click on Configure Modifications we are automatically taken to the Women > Dresses > Bridesmaid dresses product page:
To the left is the navigation panel, in this category we can see the next level of categorisation is Brands, then Colour, then Price. We can then see all the items in the catalogue, displayed in a 4 per row grid style. These are ordered based on the ranking rule that is triggered for this user location.
Note: Before you start making any modifications to the location, it must be locked first. - Our scenario is to show the following colour order: Black, Pink, Gold, Purple, each of these groups will be ranked in price order high to low.
- To do this we need to create a group for each colour. So click on the first colour for our required order (Black), then click Create group, where you can configure the sort options and quantity you want to show on the page.
- Click Add Sort Field and change 'Rank by' to Price.
- Choose 'Select 4 items ... ' and click Apply.
-
Repeat these steps above to group Pink, Gold and Purple:
You will see the top row shows 4 black items ranked price high to low. The second row shows pink items ranked price high to low, the third row shows gold items ranked price high to low, and the fourth row shows purple items ranked price high to low.
The remaining dresses in this category page will be ranked based on other modifications or rules that have been configured. - Check the item appears in position as required, then click Finish. You will arrive back at the result modifications setup screen.
- Optionally, you can still make changes here if required:
- Drag and drop the group to reorder its position.
- Use triggers as dynamic attribute values for the modification i.e replace the value with a trigger.
- Copy the group.
- Delete the group.
- Click Save.
- Optionally, you can check this result modification in your Merchandising Studio Preview mode.
Navigate to Women > Dresses > Bridesmaid dresses and check that the modification displays as expected, remember we have set a date and time for this modification to take place, so it will only display when the date and time are met. - From your Merchandising Studio, go to the result modifications overview, click the checkbox next to 'Bridesmaid dresses colour', and click Send for publication.
Once this has been Published the modification is live and will take effect when the date and time is met.
Applying a Search trigger
You can apply a modification as above but by using Search, so when a user searches for Bridesmaids dresses the product page returned to them meets your strategy. Below are the steps to do this.
- Follow steps 1-6 above.
- In the search bar type in bridesmaid dresses, and press enter on your keyboard. 'Bridesmaid dresses' will appear in the search area. Click on Select location:
- Follow steps 9-22 above.

- Click Select Scope, and choose the scope. that you want this result modification to apply to. Once chosen, click Select.
- Next, you will need to select a trigger from the dropdown, for this scenario we will choose Catalogue Location:
Note: Adding a trigger location means that this product will only be blocked from the selected location. If you want to block a product across your entire site, do not add any triggers. - Next, we need to specify and find the location where this trigger will be applied, by clicking on Add Location.
In this scenario we will drill into the catalogue to Electricals:
Followed by Lights:
Then click Select location. - Optional:
- Change the dropdown from starts with (default) to, contains or equals to, or ends with.
- Add other locations.
- Once you have chosen a location, you may want the trigger to apply to all locations except the one you have selected, so you can use the checkbox to apply this option.
- Now, we want to add the action, i.e. what happens when a shopper lands on Electrical > Lights so click Configure Modifications.
- When we click Configure Modifications we are automatically taken to the Electricals > Lights product page, find item 323006002545:
- Click on the cog found in the top right corner of this item:
- Click Block item:
- You will return to the lister page, and item 323006002545 is no longer displayed. Click Finish in the top right corner.
- You will return to your Merchandising Studio and the result modification you have just created. Click Save.
