Get all (broken) workflow instances via API

Hello,

probably you all know the list of "workflow instances" that you will get when clicking on the workflow store root in the SiteArchitect.
We want to write a util (module) which is cleaning this list from broken ones. For that we need to get this list via the api. Is this somehow possible?
